Three different commercial roles

These roles can overlap. Some suppliers have deep application teams and some integrators also manufacture equipment. The important point is to understand exactly who is responsible for system performance.

Why interface ownership matters
Many commissioning problems happen at boundaries: a conveyor releases product too early, a robot has no clear recovery state, a machine fault does not propagate correctly, a sensor cannot detect all SKUs, or the operator interface does not explain what to do next. These are integration problems rather than equipment problems.
When an equipment supplier is enough
If the requirement is a standard standalone product with well-defined interfaces and the customer already has internal engineering to integrate it, an equipment supplier may be the most efficient option. System integration adds the most value when multiple disciplines and operating states must be coordinated.
